Bones of the Branch

Iron Fence from Newton Train yard

The first half of this fence was taken down and scrapped somewhere in the early or mid 1990s. On May 2, 2001, I was notified by a Ralph Bonard that the remaining half had been taken down and was up for grabs. Warren LeMay, the president of the SRC told me that we could use the fence to front our planned garden scale Sussex Branch so I made a phone call and promised the contractor removing the fence that it would be taken away that night.

An ad hoc committee of the SRC came together and rescued about 150 feet of the wrought iron fence which formerly bordered Sparta Avenue along the Newton train yard.

Six members and three trucks participated in the removal of the fencing to the SRC's Springdale headquarters where it will eventually be installed as the front to our Sussex Branch garden scale layout. The fencing was in sections varying from 6-8 feet long and weighing in at about 200-400 pounds each.

Participants included: Warren LeMay (Junior and Senior,) George and Don Mason, Ralph Bonard and Dave Rutan.

My heartfelt thanks go out to Ralph for alerting us to the situation and also for his assistance in its rescue.

Update: As of 11 September 2002 the iron fence has been moved to the Kittatinny Valley State park grounds in Andover and is being stored inside. Plans are to install it on the grounds along with an interpretive display.
